De Quervain's Release Surgery is a surgical procedure designed to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with De Quervain's tenosynovitis; a condition characterised by inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty in thumb and wrist movement. The surgery aims to release the constricted sheath surrounding these tendons, thereby reducing inflammation and restoring normal function.

What To Expect With De Quervain’s Release Surgery

Hospital stay: Typically Outpatient (may vary based on individual circumstances), Surgery time: Typically 30-45 minutes, Anaesthetic: Local Anaesthetic With or Without Sedation

The surgeon will make a small incision along the thumb side of the wrist, typically about 1-2 cm in length. The surgeon carefully identifies and releases the sheath that is constricting the inflamed tendons. The tendons are examined to ensure they move freely without constriction. Any additional tissue causing compression may also be removed. The incision is closed with sutures or surgical tape, and a sterile dressing is applied.

De Quervain’s Release Surgery Recovery

Patients may experience mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the treated area, which typically subsides within a few days to weeks. Light activities can usually be resumed within a few days, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks to allow for proper healing. Sutures are usually removed within 1-2 weeks after the procedure. In some cases, physical therapy may be recommended to help restore strength and flexibility to the thumb and wrist.

De Quervain’s Release Surgery Risks

Incision scars are typically small and well-concealed but may be visible initially. Scarring tends to fade over time. Temporary numbness or altered sensation around the incision site may occur but usually resolves over time. There is a slight risk of the condition recurring, which may require further treatment.

By addressing the underlying cause of De Quervain's tenosynovitis, this surgery can significantly improve a patient's quality of life, reducing pain and restoring normal hand function.
