Also known as: Nipple Reduction Surgery, Areola Reduction Surgery

This is a surgical procedure to alter the size, shape, and proportion of the nipples and areolas. This procedure is popular for individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their nipples and areolas, sometimes due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, or natural ageing. Nipple & Areola Reduction can help improve self-confidence and body image by creating a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing breast appearance.

What To Expect With Nipple & Areola Reduction

Hospital stay: Typically Outpatient, Surgery time: Approximately 1-2 hours, Anaesthetic: Local Anaesthesia With Sedation or General Anaesthesia

The surgeon makes incisions around the perimeter of the areolas or along the natural borders of the nipples, depending on the desired outcome. Excess tissue from the nipples and areolas is removed, either by excision or liposuction, to achieve the desired size and shape. If necessary, the size of the areolas may also be reduced by excising a portion of the outer circumference.

Nipple & Areola Reduction Recovery

Patients may experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the breast area, which can be managed with pain medication and cold compresses. Recovery time varies but generally ranges from a few days to a week, with restrictions on strenuous activities for several weeks. Patients are instructed on proper wound care techniques and may need to wear a special dressing or compression garment to support the breasts during the initial stages of the healing process. Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are scheduled to monitor healing progress and assess the results of the procedure.

Nipple & Areola Reduction Risks

While Nipple & Areola Reduction surgery is generally safe when performed by a qualified surgeon, a potential risk associated with this procedure is temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation, including numbness or hypersensitivity. Proper surgical technique and post-operative care can minimise the risk of visible scarring, but some degree of scarring is inevitable. There is a slight risk of asymmetry in nipple size or position, however this can often be corrected with revision surgery if necessary.
