What To Expect With Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Hospital stay: 1-2 days, Surgery time: 2-4 hours, Anaesthetic: General Anaesthesia

The surgeon makes several incisions in the abdominal area to access the weakened or damaged muscles and tissues. The muscles of the abdominal wall are repaired and tightened using sutures, often reinforcing them with mesh to provide additional support. Synthetic or biologic mesh may be used to reinforce the repaired abdominal wall, particularly in cases of large hernias or significant muscle weakness. The incisions are closed with sutures or surgical staples, and drains may be placed to remove excess fluid and prevent fluid accumulation.

Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Recovery

Patients are encouraged to gradually increase mobility and activity levels during recovery, with restrictions on heavy lifting and strenuous activities for several weeks. Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled with the surgeon to monitor the healing progress, remove drains, and assess for any complications. Complete recovery from abdominal wall reconstruction may take several months, depending on the extent of the surgery and individual healing factors.

Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Risks

While abdominal wall reconstruction is generally safe, proper surgical techniques and post-operative care can minimise the risk of infection. The collection of blood (hematoma) or fluid (seroma) at the surgical site may occur, requiring drainage or aspiration. Complications related to mesh placement, such as mesh migration, infection, or rejection, may occur in some cases.
