Labiaplasty
Also known as: Vulval Surgery, Aesthetic Genital Surgery, Labial Reduction
Aesthetic genital surgery, also referred to as Labiaplasty can include a number of surgical procedures designed to improve the appearance of the vulva.
Labial reduction is a procedure chosen to decrease the size of the labia minora, or 'inner lips' of the vagina. Most women choose this procedure to aesthetic reasons, whilst some also opt for it due to finding some activities uncomfortable such as sports and penetration.

What To Expect With Labiaplasty
Hospital stay: Usually an outpatient procedure, Surgery time: 1 - 1.5 hours, Anaesthetic: Local
Labiaplasty is a procedure which alters the size of the labia, most commonly reducing the size of the labia minora. This procedure involves surgically removing the excess part of the labia minora to give it a more symmetrical shape. This is a relatively quick procedure which usually does not require an overnight stay in hospital.
Labiaplasty Recovery
You may need up to 2 weeks off work to recover. You will experience some pain and swelling and are advised to take painkillers to ease this. Applying a cold compress can also help. During your recovery time you need to keep the area clean and free from infection. You must also avoid any sexual activity for around 6 weeks, as well as the use of tampons.
Labiaplasty Risks
Complications and risks following labial reduction surgery are very rare, especially when carried out by a highly skilled surgeon. However, infection can sometimes occur. In these cases, antibiotics will be prescribed. You may also experience bleeding, scarring and reduced sensation. Before your procedure you will have a consultation with your surgeon during which they will outline all risks of the procedure and you can discuss any concerns you may have.
