What To Expect With a Tummy Tuck
Hospital stay: 1 night recommended, Surgery time: 2 - 4 hours, Anaesthetic: General
There are several types of tummy tuck which you can discuss with your surgeon:
Mini Abdominoplasty: This is the ideal choice if you only have a small amount of excess skin. Your surgeon will only need to make a small incision above the pubic area.
Endoscopic Abdominoplasty: This may be the best option if you only need to have the muscles of your abdominal wall tightened. It will also only entail small incisions.
Full Abdominoplasty: This is the best option if you have a lot of excess skin. A cut will be made between the hips. Sometimes your surgeon will need to reconstruct your belly button and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.
If you have excess fat in addition to your excess skin, your surgeon may suggest liposuction in addition to a tummy tuck.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
Full recovery from a tummy tuck usually takes around four to six weeks.
Your tummy will feel tight and sore and you will also have some swelling. You are advised to take painkillers to ease this. You should take a week off work after your procedure and avoid any activity. You should be able to carry out light day-to-day activities after two weeks, but you should avoid strenuous activities for the whole six weeks. After your procedure, you will have some scars across the lower tummy and around the belly button which will gradually fade slightly.
Tummy Tuck Risks
Tummy Tuck is a commonly performed procedure and more cases than not, are very successful. Complications are very rare however, occasionally infection may occur. If you do experience an infection, you may need antibiotics. Smokers are likely to have a longer healing process and their wounds may take longer than normal to heal. It’s also important to note that the appearance of your tummy will still change after your procedure as a result of ageing or weight changes. Exercise to keep your weight steady is encouraged. You may need further surgery in the future to maintain your desired results. Before your procedure you will have a consultation with your surgeon during which they will outline all risks of the procedure and you can discuss any concerns you may have.
