Liposuction
Also known as: Lipoplasty, Fat Removal, Body Contouring
Liposuction is a highly commonly performed aesthetic surgery procedure. Liposuction can help to contour an area of localised stubborn fat deposits that do not respond well to diet or exercise. The most common sites for liposuction are the upper and lower abdomen, thighs, arms, buttocks and chin. Liposuction may be performed as a primary procedure for body contouring or combined with other surgical techniques such as facelift, abdominoplasty, or thigh lift procedures to tighten loose skin.

What To Expect With Liposuction
Hospital stay: Usually an outpatient procedure, Surgery time: 1 - 2 hours, Anaesthetic: General
Liposuction involves sucking small areas of fat out of parts of the body where deposits of fat tend to collect, such as the hips, thighs and tummy. The aim is to alter the body shape, and results are generally long-lasting providing you maintain a stable body weight. This procedure is best suited to patients with deposits of fat that they are unable to lose through regular exercise and a healthy diet.
Liposuction Recovery
After your procedure, you will experience discomfort and swelling for a few days, but we will give you pain relief immediately and you are advised to continue taking them when you are home. We may also provide you with antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Depending on the size of the area treated, you should take around 10 days off work to recover and you should avoid any strenuous activities for up to four weeks. You will have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon during which you will be advised on when you can resume your normal activities.
Liposuction Risks
Complications and risks following Liposuction are very rare, especially when carried out by a highly skilled surgeon. However, infection can sometimes occur. In these cases, antibiotics will be prescribed. You may also experience bruising, swelling, pain and scarring. Scars will usually be red to begin with and will gradually become paler. Sometimes fluid collects in the areas where the liposuction has been performed. It may need to be drained by having a needle through the skin, or by having another operation. As a result of ageing and other circumstances such as pregnancy or weight gain, your body will continue to change after your procedure. You may need further surgery to maintain your desired results. Before your procedure you will have a consultation with your surgeon during which they will outline all risks of the procedure and you can discuss any concerns you may have.
