Breast Augmentation
Also known as: Augmentation Mammoplasty, Breast Implants, Boob Job, Breast Enhancement, Fat Transfer Augmentation
Breast Augmentation Surgery commonly referred to as a ‘Boob Job’, enhances small or sagging breasts through the insertion of a silicone implant.
Women commonly opt for a Breast Augmentation procedure to enlarge the size of their breasts following pregnancy, ageing and weight loss. Additionally, implants can be used to rectify asymmetry in breasts, or as reconstruction after a mastectomy.

What To Expect With Breast Augmentation Surgery
Hospital stay: 1 night, Surgery time: 1.5 - 2 hours, Anaesthetic: General
Prior to undergoing breast augmentation surgery, you will have a pre-operative assessment with a nurse to check your general health. You will also have a consultation with your surgeon to discuss your desires and any concerns you may have. Your breast augmentation surgery will be performed using general anaesthetic, therefore you should not eat or drink anything in the hours before surgery. You will then stay with us overnight here at Berkshire Grove Hospital, in your own private bedroom with a dedicated nurse to look after you.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Full recovery from breast augmentation surgery usually takes around 4-6 weeks.
Pain medication is typically only needed for a few days, and swelling should reduce after a few weeks. After the surgery, you are highly advised to wear a post-surgical bra and you will be given postoperative exercises to optimise your results. You should be able to return to work after 1-2 weeks. Wounds will be checked 1 week after your surgery, and you will have a post-operative consultation after 1 month, 3 and 6 months.
Breast Augmentation Risks
Every procedure has its risks, yet these risks are largely minimised when the procedure is carried out by one of our highly experienced surgeons. Possible breast augmentation surgery risks include anaesthesia risks, bleeding, changes in nipple or breast sensation, and (extremely rarely) BIA-ALCL, a type of cancer. This only affects around one in 300,000 people and it is very treatable. Here at Berkshire Grove, we are extremely fastidious about antimicrobial precautions. During breast augmentation, precautions include covering your nipples during surgery, washing the implant cavity with an antibacterial solution, opening the implants immediately before they are needed, using fresh gloves to handle them and inserting them through a sterile funnel.
