What To Expect With Prominent Ear Correction Surgery
Hospital stay: 0 nights, Surgery time: 1-2 hours, Anaesthetic: Local or General
Prominent Ear Correction is a relatively simple procedure that involves making a small incision behind the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The surgeon will then remove excess cartilage and skin from behind the ear, and reshape the remaining cartilage to achieve the desired contour and position. The surgeon will then re-stitch the ear to position it closer to the head. This surgery is usually done using local anaesthetic, and in most cases the patient will be able to return home the same day. The specific techniques used during Pinnaplasty may vary based on the individual patient’s anatomy and surgical goals.
Prominent Ear Correction Surgery Recovery
After your ear correction surgery, your ears will feel sore and tender for a few weeks but you are advised to take painkillers to ease this. You will be given protective dressing which is particularly important to wear whilst sleeping or laying down. Recovery time is typically short, and most patients can resume normal activities within a few days to a week. Your stitches will be removed between 5-10 days after the procedure. It is not until this point that you can wash your hair, however it is important to keep the area behind your ears clean and avoid putting pressure on the treated area.
Prominent Ear Correction Surgery Risks
Complications and risks following Prominent Ear Correction is very rare, especially when carried out by a highly skilled surgeon. However infection can sometimes occur. In these circumstances, you may require antibiotics and regular dressing changes. As the procedure is carried out from behind the ears, a small scar is left but it is not very visible. The scar behind the ear usually settles well, but on rare occasions, it can become red and lumpy. Although uncommon, the ear may return to its original position if subjected to heavy impact, pulling trauma, or if an infection develops. The vast majority of patients are extremely pleased with the results of their ear correction procedure. Before your procedure you will have a consultation with your surgeon during which they will outline all risks of the procedure and you can discuss any concerns you may have.
